maybe being this centralized even if the tech is good and the owners are cool is not a good idea.

@wjmaggos I run Matrix in my lab and force students and collaborators on it. But the onboarding friction (key management, verification) is still too high. Those need to be addressed before I would recommend it for activist groups who can't afford to lose participants to so-so UX.

Even with Element X? I found that to be a huge improvement and have gotten some friends on it since. I've used it for calling into my podcast (very limited) and never had a problem. Worse than mastodon?

@wjmaggos Yes, still with the new versions. Students have trouble with setting up the keys and getting verified; I don't think the interface is very successful in communicating what those things mean and why they are necessary and how to achieve them.
